Font Pairing Guide: 20 Google Fonts Combinations That Work

How to pair fonts by contrast, x-height and mood, with 20 tested Google Fonts combinations for SaaS, editorial, e-commerce, portfolios and dashboards.

Good pairing is about contrast with shared proportions: two fonts that differ clearly in style (serif vs sans, geometric vs humanist) but agree on x-height and width so text lines up. Here are the rules and twenty combinations you can copy.

Three rules

  1. One voice, one workhorse. The headline font carries personality; the body font stays neutral and readable at 16 px.
  2. Contrast in style, harmony in proportion. Pair a high-contrast serif with a low-contrast sans, but check that lowercase heights look similar at the same size.
  3. Never two of the same kind. Two geometric sans faces (Poppins + Montserrat) look like a mistake; one geometric + one humanist works.

Testing a pair in 30 seconds

Open both font pages, type the same headline and paragraph into the editable specimen, and view them side by side at the sizes you will actually use. Then check weights: you need at least regular and bold in the body font, and one heavy weight in the headline font.

Sizes and hierarchy

A simple scale that works with most pairs: body 16–18 px, small 14 px, H3 24 px, H2 32 px, H1 48–64 px, line-height 1.5 for body and 1.1 for headlines. Let weight and size do the work and you rarely need a third font.
