There are more than 200 open-source icon sets and 200,000 icons in the Free Creative Assets search. These twelve cover almost every product design need. All are free for commercial use.

1. Lucide (MIT)

The community fork of Feather: 1,500+ consistent 24 px outline icons, 2 px stroke, official packages for React, Vue, Svelte, Angular, Flutter and Figma. The default choice for modern SaaS dashboards. Browse Lucide.

2. Tabler Icons (MIT)

5,900+ icons in outline and filled styles, same 24 px grid and stroke as Lucide but with far more coverage (brands, devices, maps). Browse Tabler.

3. Phosphor (MIT)

9,000+ icons in six weights (thin to fill and duotone). The weights make it ideal for design systems that need hierarchy. Browse Phosphor.

4. Heroicons (MIT)

From the Tailwind team: outline, solid, mini and micro variants tuned for 24, 20 and 16 px. Small set (about 300), impeccable quality. Browse Heroicons.

5. Material Symbols (Apache 2.0)

Google's 3,500+ icons as a variable font and SVGs, with adjustable weight, fill, grade and optical size. Best for Android and Material-based products. Browse Material Symbols.

6. Iconoir (MIT)

1,600 hand-drawn-feeling outline icons with a slightly softer geometry, good for consumer apps. Browse Iconoir.

7. Remix Icon (Apache 2.0)

3,000+ icons in line and fill pairs, strong on business, finance and communication. Browse Remix Icon.

8. Solar (CC BY 4.0)

7,000+ icons in six styles including bold duotone and broken-line, a distinctive look for marketing sites. Requires visible attribution. Browse Solar.

9. Fluent UI System Icons (MIT)

Microsoft's 4,000+ icons in regular and filled at multiple sizes; the natural choice for Windows and Office-adjacent products. Browse Fluent.

10. Hugeicons (MIT free tier)

4,000+ stroke icons free, with paid variants. Wide coverage of AI, crypto and e-commerce concepts. Browse Hugeicons.

11. Simple Icons (CC0)

3,200+ brand logos as monochrome SVGs, with brand colors in metadata. The standard for "login with" buttons and tech-stack sections. Browse Simple Icons.

12. Font Awesome Free (CC BY 4.0)

Still the most recognised set: 2,000+ free icons in solid, regular and brands. Requires attribution for the icons (the code is MIT). Browse Font Awesome.

How to pick one

  • Match the stroke. Do not mix a 1.5 px set with a 2 px set on one screen.
  • Check coverage first. Search the five oddest concepts in your product; the set that has them wins.
  • Prefer MIT/Apache when attribution is inconvenient, see the license guide.
  • Ship as inline SVG or a sprite, not as an icon font, for accessibility and crispness.

What about animated icons?

Static sets cover 95% of UI. For onboarding, empty states and delight moments, an animated Lottie icon set in your brand colors performs far better. Browse animated icon examples or read about micro-interactions.
